Stephen Wolter
Photographer Stephen Wolters’ work has always focused on simplicity of form.
Raised in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, sailing with his father helped develop his eye and taught him to appreciate the beauty of nature’s elegant simplicity.
He received his first SLR camera in 7th grade, it was the beginning of an adventure that has spanned the last 4 decades and a prestigious career, that allowed him to travel the globe, drawing inspiration from everywhere that translates into his photography.
Stephen has worked with such renowned artists as David Bailey, Paolo Roversi and the luminary, Albert Watson, who was one of his greatest influences. It was while working with Albert that Stephen was first introduced to the art world. Numerous assignments took them all over Europe and exposed the young photographer to the masters and contemporaries. As a mentor and friend, Albert Watson left an indelible mark on Stephen, which remains strong in his work and process today.
During his early career Stephen lived and honed his craft in Paris and New York, after which he landed in Chicago (in 1986) and began his professional career. Stephen has shot iconic images for Vogue, Vogue Brasil, Maybelline, Macy’s, Land’s End, Madchen and many more.
A move to Sao Paulo, Brazil in the mid-nineties rekindled Stephen’s love of nature, as he traveled the coasts shooting landscapes and observing the water culture. He has also lived and worked in Alaska, Maine, New Orleans, and Miami, which have further inspired and expanded Stephen’s vision and love of photography.
Photography has always come first for Stephen though admittedly he has always followed his curiosity and sought to build good character and develop a well-rounded personality.
